A penny saved is a penny earned. This proverb is suitable to describe how salt and sugar affects our body. A teaspoon of sugar and salt in your beverages or your food won’t kill you in an instant. For almost every food that you find in restaurants, street food, and even in your own home contains sugar and salt.
Sugar and salt content are found almost in every beverage and meals. However, problems occur when you consume too much-added sugar. Sugar and salt have a bittersweet reputation when it comes to human health. Sugar occurs naturally in all foods that contain carbohydrates, such as fruits and vegetables, grains, and dairy. As for salt, for example, pieces of bread and cereals can have high amounts of salt.
From the example, we can know that even in simple food like slices of bread and cereal, they contain salt. The ketchup and sauce that we add in our meals also contain sugar and salt. In can beverages like soda can be found at least 5 spoons of sugar. When we eat in the restaurant, we also don’t know how much spoons sugar and salt they added on our plate.
High Sugar and Salt Consumption Effects
The human body requires a small amount of salt and sugar. How sugar actually affects heart health is not completely understood, but it appears to have several indirect connections. For instance, high amounts of sugar overload the liver and too much salt can lead to high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke.
Over sugar consumption leads to obesity by replacing foods that would be nutrient-dense with empty calories. It effects on our blood sugar level that will cause diabetes. Sugar can affect your body composition; it means that sugar will accelerate aging on your skin. You won’t look older too soon, right?
Control Your Salt and Sugar
Controlling sugar consumption should be started at a young age. The simplest way to reduce the amount of salt and sugar is avoiding highly processed foods and not adding salt or sugar to your meal. As for sugar, we can control our sugar needs by consuming fruits. Fructose or sugar content in fruits can fulfill our daily sugar needs.
For diet people, they suggest leaving sugar and salt. They add more calories in food so it causes diet failure. Salt also bind water and fat. Their diet effort is in vain if they still didn’t limit the salt portion.
Try Other Spices
You can start to replace sugar and salt with natural spices. For example, if you want your food more tasteful you can add mushroom broth powder. It gives savory taste like salt but lighter. You also can try another spice like oregano, basil, and tarragon.
Consuming whole foods that contain natural sugar is okay. Vegetables and fruits also have high amounts of fiber, essential minerals, and antioxidants, and dairy foods contain protein and calcium. So, we still get another nutrient if we consume natural sugar from fruits and vegetables.
Controlling doesn’t mean you didn’t consume at all. Always take the right portion of sugar and salt. If we did, more benefits will come along as for the right portion that our body needs. Don’t let your body have more salt or more sugar, but enough is enough.
